The novel has a happy ending, for Lorna survived, and John Ridd got his revenge on Carver Doone. At the time Blackmore wrote his novel there was no tower, only a west window. It is also likely that it would have been unglazed, making Carver Doone's shot easier.Īn alternative theory is that the shot was fired through a window at the west end of the nave, where the tower door is now. In the 17th century the church was much smaller, and the window would have looked onto the high altar. During the couple's wedding ceremony at Oare Church, Lorna's half-brother Carver Doone shot her through a small lancet window in the south wall. In Blackmore's enduring romance, set at the time of Monmouth's Rebellion in the late 17th century, a local farmer named John Ridd falls in love with Lorna, the adopted daughter of the outlaw Doone family.

I wouldn’t really categorize it as a how-to, although she does include anecdotal information on packing, acquiring lodging, and getting along for 87 days. She includes the destination but not always the exact route that they took. I suppose it would come under the heading of a travelogue.Īlthough I think you would have a difficult time recreating the exact journey from just the information contained in the book. It’s written in the form of a journal with a chronicle of each day’s activities. I had kind of a tough time categorizing this book. This also looks to be her first book which is pretty exciting! What it Is and What it Isn’t The book doesn’t give a lot of background on her other than she has a passion for Harley Davidson’s and loves to travel which I guess is enough if you’re writing about riding across the country on a motorcycle. The author (and publisher), Hollie Bell-Schinzing, resides in Rochester, New York. So when the book “One Day at a Time – A husband and wife’s 87- day road trip through 22 US states on 2 Harley Softails” arrived in the mail I dove right in. To fill the void I’ve been reading anything and everything I can get my hands on about motorcycles. I’ve had this vague sense of depression for the last month and I’ve been dreaming about riding with increasing frequency. Between the bitterly cold, snowy weather and some minor health issues, I haven’t been on my bike since October. It’s been forever since I’ve ridden my motorcycle. I don't need to wish her anything, for she'll be happy with you. If and when you fall in love, may you be happy with her. It seemed to me that it had been trying to emerge from my soul all my life, and only now. When I woke up it seemed to me that some snatch of a tune I had known for a long time, I had heard somewhere before but had forgotten, a melody of great sweetness, was coming back to me now. Who knows, perhaps you've reconciled me with myself, resolved all my doubts. You won't fail me, will you? Only two minutes, and you've made me happy forever. I feel I know you so well that I couldn't have known you better if we'd been friends for twenty years. I am going to dream about you the whole night, the whole week, the whole year. I know so little of real life that I just can't help re-living such moments as these in my dreams, for such moments are something I have very rarely experienced. Archie is a splendid character to have invented and his first person remarks and descriptions are always most entertaining to read. "I have enjoyed a great many of his books. However in some ways this novel is one of his most entertaining. It seems to me that Stout had yet to hit his stride and fully develop Nero Wolfe's potential. This is an early Nero Wolfe novel, the fifth which Rex Stout wrote. Wolfe and Archie find themselves embroiled in the investigation. Of course murder intervenes and the entire event goes off the rails. He wants a particular recipe from one of the chefs. That doesn't sound like enough incentive to get Wolfe to leave home but he has an ulterior motive. As much as Wolfe hates to leave home he accepts an invitation to give a speech to the fifteen chefs named the greatest in the world. An early Nero Wolfe novel which is also one of the best. The one with one store?” “Clearly he’s trying to push me out of my shell.” “It’s more of an instruction card.” I waved her off. Her smile grew just like mine had, and by the time she was done she looked up, tears of excitement in her eyes. “Right,” she grumbled and started reading. “Oh, so now it’s Wes?” Her eyebrows arched. “Kidding,” I said, laughing as I held out the note. I was too happy, too excited to think about anything but the fact that a guy had written me a letter. In fact, I hadn’t thought once about my parents’ accident. It was the first morning in two years that I wasn’t thinking about my past. I re-read the note again and again, each time I read it, my heart pounded harder in my chest. My smile couldn’t get any bigger if it tried. Be sure to smile really big and raise your hand at least once in class. Your mission, if you choose to accept it: Make two new friends, you know, people other than your roommate and her cousin. People don’t write letters anymore… such a shame, don’t you think? Day 1. Once seated, I tore into the note and read. I snatched the paper and went to pour us both cups of coffee. “It’s not like it has anthrax in it.” Lisa bent down and picked it up. Holy crap! My name, in really nice handwriting. “That.”Ī piece of paper was folded on the floor. “The door?” Seriously, did she drink last night? I honestly couldn't 'put the book down' (well, my e-reader, I couldn't put my kindle down) and can't wait for the next installment in the series. The book quickly sets up for a foreign invasion of American soil and jumps right into guerrilla warfare from Special Forces members, harassing the occupying forces at every turn. First in the series, Robert Patrick Lewis a former Special Forces Medic sets up for a very plausible future for America, a future where the fight has come to our doorstep. If you were a fan of the short-lived television show Jericho, either of the Red Dawn movies or the Australian film Tomorrow When the War Began you will love this book. What made the experience of listening to The Pact the most enjoyable? Awesome, can't wait for the rest of the series! |
